Saturday 6th |October 2007

Newcastle progress.

Newcastle entertained Trewern, from the Montgomeryshire League second division, in their first round tie of the prestigious J Emrys Morgan Cup. This cup is the premier competition for Mid Wales junior football clubs. Newcastle started brightly and within 5 minutes Mark Jones received a defence splitting  pass from Jimmy Thomas, to beat the advancing keeper. Trewern hit back after a quarter of the game, when they equalised from a corner with a magnificent headed goal. Just before the break Newcastle were awarded a free kick some 25 yards out. Craig Morris blasted the ball that deflected off the wall and into the net giving Newcastle the lead. Three minutes later Mark Jones broke down the right flank, crossed the ball for Edgar Whately to put Newcastle into a three goals to one lead.  The second half was exciting with Trewern doing their best to get back into the game. Newcastle defended their lead admirably with Michael Brick marshalling the defence in a masterful way. Newcastle went close to increasing their lead on two or three occasions with shots from Mark Jones and Craig Morris both brilliantly saved by the Trewern goalkeeper. Newcastle progress to the next round with a three goals to one victory.

Next Saturday Newcastle are at home again, but this time in the first round of the Shropshire Junior Cup against Hopesgate Reserves, kick off 3.00pm.
