Watson Associates Mid Wales League South

Newcastle 2, Knighton Res 0.

Tuesday 28th August 2007

Newcastle see red.

Newcastle’s Tuesday evening kick off to the new season ended with a victory for Newcastle by two goals to nil.  Knighton proved to be very tough opposition after a very even well contested first half which ended with honours even. The second period followed the same pattern with Newcastle beginning to get the upper hand. After 25 minutes Mark Jones put Newcastle ahead with a well taken goal from a narrow angle into the far corner of the net.  Then, minutes later, the game took a dramatic turn when veteran Newcastle defender Phil Morris was adjudged to have deliberately handled the ball in the area. A penalty was awarded,  Morris was shown the red card, his first in a long distinguished Mid Wales League South career. Newcastle felt justice was done, when goalkeeper David Exell dived low to his left to bring off a magnificent save. Newcastle down to ten men were buoyed by the penalty save and with a couple of minutes to go Mark Jones took on the Knighton defence, beat three players, to score a thoroughly deserved goal to clinch the match. Jimmy Thomas and Edgar Whately were prominent in attack for Newcastle, with Richard Jones and Michael Brick prominent in defence.

Newcastle are away at Penybont for their second league match of the season, next Tuesday evening kick off 6.30pm.
